What is plastic surgery of the abdominal wall?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove sagging skin, excess fat and correction of spaced abdominal muscles (diastasis). It restores the tight and smooth contour of the abdomen, especially after pregnancy, significant weight loss or as we age.

Who is the procedure suitable for?

IMPORTANT!

It is important that you are at least 18 years old, have a stable weight, good general health, personal motivation for the operation and realistic expectations for the result.

Before the procedure, the plastic surgeon will talk to you about all your questions and expectations. The choice of a breast lift method is carried out individually, together with the specialist. Women who are planning pregnancy and breastfeeding are usually advised to postpone surgery.

Informed consent is a mandatory document that contains a detailed description of the procedure, possible risks and complications, anesthesia and financial conditions. It is signed after careful familiarization and the opportunity to ask questions to the plastic surgeon or anesthesiologist.

What is surgery?

1

Technique and methods of the operation

The surgical incision is located under the navel, in an area that remains hidden by the underwear. The skin and adipose tissue are lifted, and if necessary, the navel is released and prepared for moving. Strengthening of the straight abdominal muscles is performed, which contributes to improving the shape and stability of the abdominal wall. Then excess skin and fat are removed, the navel is positioned in an anatomically correct place, and the incisions are closed with resorbable sutures that do not require removal. In cases where it is not necessary to move the navel, miniabdominoplasty is performed, with the incision located lower. Abdominoplasty can be combined with liposuction to achieve an even better aesthetic result.

Anesthesia and Downtime

Drains are placed for a period of 24 to 48 hours, and the patient wakes up with elastic underwear, necessary in the postoperative period. All necessary medications – antibiotics and painkillers – are administered intravenously during the hospital stay, and the pain is usually moderate and well controlled. A stay in the healthcare facility for observation within 48 to 72 hours is required.

Recovery - what to expect after surgery?

Each patient recovers for a different period of time.

The incisions are made along the old marks. Recovery is faster and easier.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is abdominoplasty painful?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and no pain is felt during the operation. In the postoperative period, moderate discomfort is possible, which is usually successfully controlled with medication.

Initial recovery takes about 2–3 weeks, with most patients returning to work after 10–15 days. Full recovery and shaping of the final result occurs within a few months.

The incision is located low in the abdomen, so the scar remains hidden under the underwear. Over time, the scar fades significantly, but remains permanent.
